Houston Cake Smash Photographer | Baby E
I love one year sessions! It’s so fun to see babies become a little more independent at this age. Outdoor sessions are great for active one year olds so they have plenty of space to move around… Once they learn to walk they don’t want to stay still, ha! But studio sessions are great too… especially in the summer when it’s so hot in Houston (and you won’t have to worry about mosquitoes!).
There are a few things to keep in mind for a one year session… Keep outfits simple and timeless. A romper with a simple bow works great for baby girls, and neutral colored overalls in a light neutral color are great for boys. I’ll link a few of my favorite places to shop for one year olds at the end of the post!
Babies at this age are very active so having some things on hand to play with during their session is key. I love incorporating things such as wooden rattles or blocks, or baby’s favorite (neutral colored) stuffed animal.

And what’s a one year session without a cake smash?!? This is my favorite way to end a one year session. A couple of tips for a cake smash:
- A small, simple cake with white icing works best
- You can order a simple smash cake from a grocery store bakery, or a custom cake from a bakery. I love “naked” cakes that have just a little bit of icing… You typically have to order those from a bakery.
- Some babies just aren’t interested in their cake. I recommend bringing some cheerios or other small treats that baby likes that we can put on their cake to encourage them to eat it (or at the very least they will eat the treats covered in icing and it will look like they’re eating their cake in the pictures)
