I love doing in home newborn sessions! I’m always so honored to be invited into my clients’ homes to capture this special time for them. I thought I would take a few minutes to answer some questions that I typically get about in home sessions.

What do you bring to the session?

I always bring a few basic things to the session… Besides my camera, I also bring a studio light, a Moses basket for baby, a white blanket, wraps and simple headbands for baby. I also have some dresses on hand in my client wardrobe that I bring for moms if they need something to wear for the session. Lastly, I bring some album and print samples so that my clients can see some of the products that they’re able to buy in their gallery.

Many in home newborn photographers use only natural light, but in my opinion, a studio light or flash is necessary for an in home session. Many times, clients want pictures in a nursery where the lighting may not be ideal. The studio light helps supplement the natural light to create beautiful, even lighting for pictures. Even though this nursery had two windows, it was still a little dark and had a lot of shadows from the trees outside, so I used my studio light to add a little extra light for these bright and airy images.

Here are a couple of pictures with the Moses baskets I have. Baby will be swaddled for most of the pictures, but if they’re awake and want to move around, I typically put them in the romper or a onesie.

Does the session include pictures of just the baby, or can parents/ siblings be included?

The session includes pictures with immediate family members (including your fur babies!) as well as individual pictures of the baby. Oftentimes grandparents may be visiting and they’re welcome to be included in a few pictures as well.

Pictures with fur babies are always a favorite…

Does my home need to be decorated a certain way for an in home session?

The short answer is no… I’ve photographed newborn sessions in rooms with dark walls, light walls and everything in between. But if you want the bright, light airy images that you see on my website then I do have a few recommendations as to what photographs best…

Having at least one room with minimal decor and light, neutral colored walls is helpful. Even a guest bedroom works great! All of the pictures below were taken in my clients’ guest bedroom. The light colored walls and white bedding were the perfect backdrop for the session.

I have many clients that have worked so hard creating a beautiful nursery with bold accent walls, and of course we will make sure to capture that too! The same clients from the pictures above had a basketball themed nursery that featured an accent wall of an actual basketball court.

What do I need to do to prepare for my session?

After my clients book their in home newborn session session with me, I send them an e-mail with everything they need to do to prepare for their session. I’ll help you plan your wardrobe with my Client Wardrobe Style guide. It has suggestions on what to wear, what photographs best for new moms and even has links to some of my favorite dresses that are available to purchase online. I also send a link to dresses I have on hand in my client wardrobe if you want to borrow something for your session.

Please know that your home doesn’t have to be 100% tidy and picked up for the session! You just had a baby and I know there are so many other things for you to focus your time on right now. I do ask that clients take a few minutes before the session to declutter areas where we’ll be taking pictures… for example, removing anything from nightstands that you don’t want included in the pictures. You can just move the items to a different place (for example, master bathroom) and then put them back when we’re done!
