In home lifestyle sessions are becoming more popular in Houston and I can understand why.  Parents spend so much time and effort getting the nursery set up just right… it’s nice to be able to capture those details in the nursery and the home you are living in when you bring home your bundle of joy.  Not only that, but it’s also convenient to not have to pack up all of baby’s things to sit in a studio for hours.

If you’re wondering if an in home newborn session would be the right choice for you, I’ve put together some thoughts to help you make an informed decision.

Style

First, consider what look or style you are wanting for your portraits.  Do the colors, light and décor in your home match up with that style?  Since the style of my photography is light and airy, I recommend that clients have at least one room in their house with light, neutral-colored walls and minimal décor.  This can be the nursery, master bedroom, a guest bedroom or living room.  Your home doesn’t have to be perfectly decorated in order to photograph well.  In fact, some of my best sessions have been in a very simple nursery that has very little décor.  Too much décor on the walls or in the background can be distracting in portraits so simple is usually better.

That isn’t to say that your home has to look one certain way in order to do an in home newborn session, but know that the style of your home will be reflected in your portraits. If the style of your home is the complete opposite look of how you envision your newborn portraits, then it might be best to consider doing a studio session.

Lighting

Another factor to consider for an in home newborn session is lighting.  When I do an in home newborn session we’ll turn off all of the overhead lights, lamps, etc. and will only use window light.  While I prefer to use only natural light, I do have a studio light that I always bring with me to use if needed so it’s not a necessity.  This is one thing to consider if you are looking at other in home newborn photographers… do they have lighting that they bring if needed?  Even if you have decent natural light in your home, it may not be enough on a really overcast, rainy day so it’s important that a photographer has lighting that can be used if needed.

Individual baby portraits

If you are considering an in home newborn lifestyle session, the individual portraits of baby will most likely not be as posed compared to if you were to do a studio session. Some in home newborn photographers won’t bring any props or accessories for baby; other photographers may bring a few things with them.

For my in home newborn sessions, I will typically bring a basket and some neutral/ off white blankets for the individual pictures of baby. I will also bring wraps, headbands, etc. so you don’t have to worry about what baby is going to wear for the session. The baby is naturally posed for the individual pictures, typically wrapped in a simple swaddle and either laying on a neutral colored blanket or in a basket. I also like to take some pictures of baby in their crib. If you have anything your home you would like to include in the photos (a special baby blanket, etc.) I’m always happy to do that as well.

Fur babies

One of my favorite things about doing an in home newborn session is that you can include your fur baby in the pictures! After all, they were your baby first, right?
