I frequently get asked by clients about what is the best size to print their photos to hang on the wall. It really depends on a few things- (1) the size wall you plan to hang your pictures, (2) how many photos you plan to hang on the wall, and (3) if you want to custom frame the pictures or use frames that you can purchase from the store.

(1) Size of the wall: You want to make sure the picture(s) you hang on the wall look proportionate on the wall where you’re hanging them. If you want to hang the pictures over a piece of furniture, you can measure the width of the furniture to get an idea of sizing. (Hint: 8×10 pictures are almost always going to look too small!)

(2) How many pictures you want to include: Personally I prefer a grouping of 3 or 4 pictures, as opposed to one large picture (unless you’re hanging the picture over a small piece of furniture or on a small wall).

(3) Custom framing vs. store bought frames: There are benefits to both custom frames and store bought frames.

Custom framing is great because you have unlimited options of sizes and so many different options of frames. For example, if you want to do a set of 3 or 4 square frames, you’ll most likely need to do custom framing because it can be difficult to find square frames in stores. The backing is also sealed to help preserve your pictures and keep dust from getting inside.

Store bought frames are generally going to be less expensive; however, the sizes and frame options are also limited. If you’re planning to frame the prints yourself, I recommend getting 11×14 prints that are matted to 16×20. You can find 16×20 frames in stores such as Home Goods, Hobby Lobby and Michaels, and they usually work well when you group them together in groups of 3 or 4. You can order the matted fine art prints through your gallery to ensure the best color and quality… these fine art prints are printed on beautiful cotton paper with the most beautiful texture and color.
