Katy TX photographer | What to Wear

One of the most important (and sometimes stressful) things to decide when planning your photo session is what to wear.  I get it… I have found myself in this same situation year after year when I plan my own family portraits.  Thankfully over the years I’ve figured out some tips about what colors and styles will work best for photo sessions.

I love helping my clients plan their wardrobe for their session.  Before their session, I will get some information from my clients about their style and then I’ll put together a style board to give them some inspiration for clothing for their session.  Here’s an example of a recent style board:

I will also send my clients links to some options that are available to purchase at some of my favorite stores online.  Here are a few of my favorite places to shop:

Vici Collection, Red Dress Boutique and Morning Lavender for mom

Gap, Target and J Crew for dad

Zara for kids and babies

There are so many things that go into coordinating outfits for a photo session.  Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Color

Let’s start with color.  If you’ve spent any time looking through my website, you’ll probably already know that I gravitate toward light, neutral and soft colors.  Why?  Because they’re classic and timeless.  If you hang your portraits on your walls, neutral colors will go with anything in your house.  White, cream, light beige, light gray, blush and even light blue are all great choices.  I like to stick with either warm tones or cool tones when coordinating outfits for a session.

If you want a more “seasonal” look to your portraits, you can always incorporate more earthy tones with neutrals in the fall, and lighter colors in the spring/ summer.

Style

There are certain styles that are classic and timeless.  For moms, a casual dress in a lightweight fabric works great.  I especially love maxi dresses.  For dads, I recommend wearing nondress khaki pants with a neutral colored shirt.  I recommend the same for kids (dress for girls, and a simple shirt with khakis for boys).

Keep jewelry simple so that it isn’t distracting in the photos.  Hair and make up are also very important.  I recommend using a good hair and make up artist that has experience doing make up for photo sessions.  (I’m working on another blog post soon with hair and make up tips, so if you decide to do your own hair and make up, check back soon for more tips!)
