One of the most important things to look for when hiring a newborn photographer is how much experience they have photographing newborns. I’ve been photographing newborns for over ten years now, and over the years I’ve learned so many things specific to newborn photography.
3 reasons why experience is important for a newborn photographer:
- Handling a newborn: An experienced newborn photographer will be focused on the safety of your baby as their #1 priority. They will also know how to calm a fussy baby. Even if your baby typically isn’t very fussy, during a newborn session they might get a little fussy since they’ll be off their typical schedule and we’ll be moving them around, changing their swaddle etc.
- Presession planning: An experienced newborn photographer will help parents prepare for their newborn session. This is one of the most important steps for me in the planning process… I send my clients two e-mails to help them prepare for the session. One e-mail is sent right after you book with me, and this includes information about what to wear and which rooms will photograph best in your home (if you’re doing an in home session). The second prep e-mail is sent a couple of days before the session and includes some tips about what to do the morning of the session to ensure baby will sleep well for the session.
- Editing: Editing can be a little different for newborns. Sometimes babies will have skin issues (baby acne or scratches on their face) that may need to be touched up.

Newborn sessions take place in my client’s home or in my natural light studio. All other sessions take place at my client’s home, outdoors or my studio. For in home sessions, I travel throughout the Houston area, including The Heights, Montrose, West University, River Oaks, Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, Katy, SugarLand, Richmond, Cypress, Spring and The Woodlands.
