How Early Should We Book Our Newborn Session
I often get asked by potential clients “How early should we book our newborn session?”. I typically recommend booking during your second trimester, and if you’re planning to do a maternity session as well, try to book toward the beginning of your second trimester. There are many reasons I recommend booking this early:
The first reason I recommend booking early is probably obvious– Many newborn photographers (including myself) only take a limited number of newborn clients each month. Booking early ensures availability, so you’re not scrambling to find someone once the baby is born. Many times, if you wait until after the baby is born to book, your first choice photographer may not have availability.
Another reason I recommend booking early is so you can check another item off your to-do list! As you get later in pregnancy, your days will be filled with doctors appointments, getting the nursery ready, getting ready for your baby shower… the list goes on! There are so many things to do to get ready for baby, and the closer your little one’s arrival gets, the list will get longer and you may feel a little overwhelmed. Start researching newborn photographers early on and get your spot secured so you don’t have to worry about it later when there are so many other things to worry about!
A follow up question I typically receive from potential clients is “How do I schedule my session when we don’t know exactly when the baby will be born?”. You may find that different photographers handle this differently… Some will go ahead and schedule a date based on your due date (for example, two weeks after your due date), and then the date can be adjusted after baby is born if he/she comes early or late. Many photographers will just pencil in your due date on their calendar to make sure they’re reserving a spot for you around that time, since they only take a certain # of sessions each month. Then once baby is born, you will contact them to schedule the exact date. The latter option is how I’ve found works best for me and my clients.
