How to Prepare for Your Houston Photography Session

How to Prepare for Your Houston Photography Session

So you’ve scheduled your Houston photography session… now what? We’ll get started planning your session right away to make sure we have plenty of time to plan.

Session Location

The first thing is to decide on your session location. For newborn sessions, I offer sessions either at my client’s home or at my natural light studio. For all other sessions (maternity, baby, family, etc.) I offer sessions either outdoors or at my studio.

If you’re considering doing an in home newborn session, it’s important to consider if there are rooms in your home that will photograph well. Nice lighting, light colored walls and minimal decor are all things that will help achieve the “light and airy” look. I do have a studio light I can bring with me that especially works great in small rooms, such as a nursery, that may not have a lot of natural light.

Can you believe the nursery in the pictures above was actually very dark? Even though it had a large window, there were trees and buildings right next to the house that blocked the light and made the room very dark. The key is to have light colored windows and a small room, and my studio light will fill the room and make it look like it’s bright and airy!

If you’re deciding between an outdoor session or studio session, one of the things to consider is the weather… If it’s during the winter or the hot summer months of Houston, then a studio session might be a better option. I don’t even offer outdoor sessions in the summer because no one wants to be sweaty and red in the face in their pictures, right?!? Another thing to think about is the time of day that the session will be done.

What to Wear

Once we’ve decided on the location, I’ll send over some information to help you decide what to wear. I know this can be stressful for most moms, but this is actually my favorite part of the process! I have a step by step method that makes picking out and coordinating outfits easy! And if this is something you really struggle with, I’m happy to put together a style board with recommended outfits for your entire family. I have a questionnaire that clients can fill out with sizes, preferred styles, etc. and then I will take it from there. WIthin a couple of days, I’ll send over a personalized style board with links to outfits that can be purchased online… so easy!

Another important thing to think about in advance is whether you want to schedule professional hair and make up. I have a preferred hair and make up artist that can either come to your home or my studio before your session. Although this isn’t required, it does make such a big difference in your pictures.
